SOME BACKGROUND INFO ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
INSIRU NAFU MIN HUMA L-ARTISTI:
Mrs. Ute Rupprecht-Hung, comes from Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany. Her husband Chau-Chun Hung, was born and grew up in Taiwan but haslived in Erlangen for more than 40 years now. The two artists have also lived in Malta since 1986, first on holidays only, but since 2005 as residents. Mrs. Hung also lived inthe U.S. for 4 years. So it is evident, they are both well travelled and have seen many countries , landscapes andcultures and this, of course, has also influenced their artisticwork. Mrs. Hung comes from an artistic family. Both her father and grandfather were painters and even as a girl of seven she showed interest in painting and sought the advice of her artistic family members. During all her school years she excelled in these activities and started sculpturing at the age of 17. But her second favorite subject–literature–was chosen for her academic career. She studied literature and philosophy in New York, Munich, Heidelberg, Berlin and at Columbia, South Carolina and received her PhD in Erlangen. She has lectured in languages and literature for many years, but also always kept up her artistic work. She was writing her PhD thesis in Erlangen when she met her husband Chau-Chun Hung, who after the study of mathematics at Fu-Jen Catholic (SVD) University in Taipei and the university of Erlangen was writing his thesis for his mathematics diploma. They got married in 1976 and their son was born in 1979. Mr. Hung has worked as scientific assistant at the firms of Siemens and Philips and as a business advisor for Philips,AT&T-Lucent in China. He too was privately trained at a very early age in the art of painting especially in water colour. And during his scientific studies and work he always kept up and improved his artistic skills. Both artists were happy finally to have enough time for painting and sculpturing, when they retired from their public engagements. Since they have lived in Malta as residents, they also became members of the Malta Society of Arts Manufacture and commerce, and have taken part in exhibitions and competitions. The title of this exhibition is ʻ Nature and Imaginationʼ. Nature we can see in both artistsʼ paintings of landscapes, seascapes and mountainscapes. But as becomes immediately visible, these are no photo realistic depictions of natural sites. Chauchun Hungʼs paintings, though they are easily recognizeable familiar sites, through his imaginative eye and strong colour responses are transformed into floating, brooding, enchanting or magical places, with theirvery own atmosphere. And Ute Hungʼs paintings and sculptures, though clearly rooted in reality, can take flights into outer space (e.g.supernovas and other spectacular sites), sometimes even excursions into the abstract, but also into the realms of fantasy (her faces of mythological characters, e.g.Pentesilea, or her figures of mermaids and angels. We hope that you will enjoy following their flights of fancy and share their pleasure in the creation of art.
