The Philantropic Society ‘Talent Mosti’ has the pleasure to invite the general public to a sacred literary-musical evening entitled ‘Niltaqgħu wiċċ imb’wiċċ mal-Mulej’ (An Encounter with the Lord) which is being held on Sunday,  21st March, 2010 at 7.00 p.m.

This activity is going to be held at the Girls’ Secondary School, Maria Regina College, Mosta, next door to the Razzett tal-Markiż Mallia Tabone, Centre of National Culture, Wied il-Għasel Street, Mosta. The evening is being presented by Alexandra Camilleri and Joe Vella with the participation of the well-known readers Ġorġ Peresso, Theresa Gauci, Charles Abela Mizzi and Charles Coleiro. The musical side will be in the hands of the talented young Mosta singer Maria Lewis who will be accompanied on the piano by Mro. Edwin Vassallo and by the violinist Jean-Carl Chircop. Maria Lewis will be singing classical as well pop songs with a religious theme.

This activity is being dedicated to the sadly missed but never forgotten Mons Angelo Camilleri, Spiritual Director Emeritus of the society for many years, Mr Charles Vassallo, Honorary Consul of San Francisco, United States of America and Honorary President of ‘Talent Mosti’ as well as Mr Victor Agius, a friend and benefactor of this society who worked very hard so that in 1998 ‘Talent Mosti’ finally acquired its official premises.

Following this literary evening ‘Talent Mosti’ will be presenting the 12th edition of the ‘Holy Week Exhibition’ by various well-known as well as new artists. This exhibition is going to be held at the society’s premises ‘Ir-Razzett tal-Markiż Mallia Tabone’ and will be inaugurated by His Excellency The Archbishop Mons. Paul Cremona O.P.

The exhibition will be open to the public between the 22nd March and the 4th of April, 2010. Whilst there, one can avail himself of the opportunity to visit the upstairs room where one can admire, amongst other exhibits, a model of the Holy Sepulchre which is a replica of the beautiful one which is taken out during the Good Friday procession in Mosta.

The exhibition will be open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. and from 5.30 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. but it will also be open on Maundy Thursday from 5.30 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. and on Good Friday from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. Entrance to the exhibition is free and parking should not be a problem.

Anton Agius

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

A.Agius skulturAnother great friend of Ghaqda Filantropika Talent Mosti, who passed away last year was the sculptor Anton Agius, who the President Emeritus H.E. Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici described as truly the “national sculptor”. He was born in Rabat, Malta on  December 1, 1933. Agius commenced his art apprenticeship under Joseph Galea, Vincent Apap and Emvin Cremona. Between 1950 and 1953 he studied art at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce, in Valletta and continued his studies at the School of Arts under Ġorġ Borg. In 1957 he won a Malta government scholarship at the Scuola del Nudo dell’Associazione Artistica Internazzionale at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, and to St Martin’s School, where he was awarded the national diploma in design, modelling, sculpture and letter cutting. Anton came back to Malta in 1961 and was determined to find an original approach to his artistic truth. He used to visit places like Ġnejna to examine rock formation, look for fossils, and analyse the shape of vines and olive trees. These media were the basic inspiration during Anton’s early phases of his career. In 1968, Anton exhibited a number of his works. During this phase of his work, Anton’s artistic expression was fast developing into pure abstract to later changed his style since he came to the conclusion that abstract art was not satisfying him as an effective means of communication with his audiences. At this point, Anton Agius’s style went through a dramatic change but it was only another facet of the versatility of his unique talent.
For ten years he taught sculpture at the Malta School of Arts.  Agius’s works are to be found in private collections in many parts of the world. Willy Brandt and Colenel Gaddafi possess some of Agius’s works of art. Among the artist’s national works are the Workers Monument at Msida, the 31 March 1979 Monument at Vittoriosa, the monument of ‘Dun Mikiel Xerri u Sħabu’ in Valletta, the monument of Mgr G. Depiro at Rabat, the statue of Manwel Dimech at Valletta, the statue of Ġużè Ellul Mercer at Dingli, the statue commemorating the victims of the Sette Giungno riots in Valletta, the bust of President Anton Buttigieg at Qala, Gozo, and the sepulchral work Kurċifiss ta’ Llum for the Dominican Order. Anton Agius has been honoured with several prizes and awards for his artistic achievement, including First Prize in the Human Rights Art Exhibition held in 1968 at the Malta National Museum, the Onoroficenza Per Meriti by the Associazione Culturale Amici di Pan of Florence in 1979, the Artist of the Year award in 1980 and in 1982 the Targa d’Oro by the Associazione Nazionale Artistica Culturale of Italy. In 1999 he was awarded First Prize in the International Art Biennale of Malta. In 2006 he was awarded a Gold Medal in recognition for his achievements in the Arts by the Malta Society of Arts.
He passed away on October 19, 2008, deeply missed by his wife Mary Louise and his surviving son Anton. His great work is a treasured memory of his monumental life and his presence for so many years at the razzett will truly be cherished.

Frans Baldacchino ‘il-Budaj’

050228_BudajFrans Baldacchino il-Budaj was one of the honorary Presidents of Talent Mosti but above all a great friend of the society. His name is synonymous with Maltese folk singing and will be remembered for his great contribution to folklore and the local musical scene. He was born on May 16, 1943 in Zejtun. He left school at age 14 and later immigrated to Australia. He declares he learnt much more “mill-ktieb tan-natura” (the book of nature) but nonetheless, he also turned to reading, writing and verse for inspiration. He was a humble man but one of deep philosophical insight. He published two poetry books to express thoughts of a folk singer). When he could not express himself in this traditional song he wrote poetry or turned to visual arts. He spoke or rather sang or wrote about the people he lived with, his experiences of life, the piazzas, the families, the country side. When he failed to understand, he turned to God. He loved the serenity of Gozo, the slowed pace vilage life, the Maltese food but above all his wife Pawla and dog Kikka. He has collaborated with various musicians, singers and artists like young singer Priscilla Psaila and folk band Etnika. These collaborations and the resulting fusion of folk with other types of music has, together with the recording of CDs both Malta and abroad, contributed to keeping the local folklore alive. With ‘Etnika’ he performed memorable performances like the Etnikafe 2001 concert at the Old Opera site in Valletta. He died on June 21, 2006 leaving a great loss only to be comforted by the national heritage he represents. Apart from his contribution to Talent Mosti like his touching performance for the hymn Innu lill-Għaqda Filantropika Talent Mosti, we like to remember him sitting with us in the courtyard of the razzett, sharing a glass of wine and cherishing the good things of life.
